They define the true doctor to be one who practices medicine for the sake of healing, not for wage earning. Socrates then defines the true ruler to be one who rules to the advantage of his subjects, not for his own advantage. Thrasymachus claims Socrates’ definition of a ruler is incorrect. Arguing that a Shepard watches over is flock in order to fatten them for sale, not for the good of the sheep. Socrates reminds Thrasymachus that they defined the true doctor as one who heals for the sake of healing, not for wage earning. Therefore the true Shepard tends for the sake of the sheep, not for wage earning.
