...bodies to fight the war both the north and south proposed and attempted to enforce draft laws, volunteers were used at first but as replacements became acute the need for conscripting men became introduced. However in the North anger among those aroused who felt that if they were drafted into the war the freed African Americans would take over their jobs. Protest (mainly poor laborers) resulted in over 100 citizens and blacks being killed and a temporary suspension of the draft in the North. However such things as the draft and suspension of habeas corpus were only temporary, the long-term and outreaching effects of the war would play much more significant roles in the fate of our struggling nation. The seemingly undying feud for economic superiority and dominance had been decided and won by the north. Ideals that southern politicians such as states rights and secession terminated to be major issues in dispute. The federal government’s supremacy had been established over the governments of the states. Of course the abolition of slavery and freeing of blacks gave the idea of “all men are created equal” true authenticity, as acknowledged by President Lincoln in his address to the nation at Gettysburg in November of 1863. In a social context, on the home front during the war American life was not gravely affected. Women of all ages and mainly blacks who had been freed from slavery felt the aftershocks of the war in their lives. With the men out on the battlefield fighting a war the women were tasked with the job of tending to and manning the farm. In the North the factories supplemented more workers to aid with the war cause and effort. On the front lines women served nurses on both sides and volunteers in soldiers’ aid society. The Civil War brought about two everlasting changes in the lives of American women. The newly discovered field of nursing was now prevalent for the first time and was an occupation that many women would bear during and after the war.
