...th Shore Holiday House, a summer camp for disadvantaged girls. I choose this because I wanted to observe an experience from a different point of view. One afternoon I was life guarding and I just assumed that the campers knew how to swim. After all, my experience was life guarding at the Beach Club where all of the campers were given swimming lessons until they had the skills needed. This was a big lesson for me and I tried to help them as much as I could. Also, they were not as well mannered as the other children so I tried to be a good role model to them. A very different situation arose this winter, when I taught CPR at Cold Spring Harbor High School. Although the students were not needy in any way, I felt that I was teaching them a skill, which could help anyone from any walk of life, rich or poor. Saving a life would be an incredible gift to anyone and probably a life changing experience. The student were fun to work with, intelligent and interested in what they were learning. It was a very positive experience for me. I felt like I was doing a worthwhile service and spending my time wisely. Later this year, I was introduced to a Trocare House, an organization at St. Patrick’s Church. I choose Trocare House, because I wanted to be exposed to different situations and I was. During the Easter vacation, I delivered Easter gifts to elderly parishioners who have difficulty going out. I always thought that everyone had many friends and family but I quickly learned that many older people are very lonely with few friends alive and relatives that live far away. Announcing that I was bringing a gift brought a smile to their faces and a few minutes of conversation was much appreciated. I felt so badly for these seniors but I was impressed with their cheerful nature and hopefully I will learn to be grateful for what I have at all time even if life presents problems.
