Charlemagne was not only strong on the battlefield, he had many other good quality's as well. He made very good relationships with several kings and nations. Charlemagne raised the level of education amoung his people drastically. Charlemagne also had a big heart, he sent great and countless gifts to the Pope, and was very caring to the poor and their needs. He built a magnificiantly beutiful church named Holy Mother of God at Aix-la-Chapelle, and had many sacred buildings restored and repaired. Monk copyists continued preserving ancient texts, which might not have survived. Some of the oldest surviving manuscripts of many ancient works are Carolingian copies. Charlemagne was a German ruler, who was crowned emperor of the Romans by the head of the church known as the Pope. In Rome, on Christmas Day in the year 800 Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne emperor of the Romans. This represented the merging of German, Christian, and Roman traditions, which is the essential characteristic of medieval civilization. Charlemagne died in the year 814. His son Louis the Pious inhereted the throne. It was virtually impossible for him to preserve the empire. The empire was too large and consisted of too many diverse people to be governed efficiantly.
