...15-51. The median age is 26. The 80 cases of the smears were signed out as HSIL. The rest of the 39 cases were diagnosed as LSIL or less. Those 39 cases was their purpose of the study. As the pathologist reviewed those 39 cases and they found that 28 cases do contain HSIL cells. The remaining 11 cases did not have HSIL on smears. They were classed as sampling errors. They found that air-drying artifact and different interpretation of immature metaplasia cells was the most common cause for misdiagnosis. Also, there was only some or few of abnormal cells on the smear. That’s what makes it difficult to interpret. Some laboratories have same experience. DeMay mentioned that it is difficult to diagnose the lesion when only less than 100 abnormal cells present on the slides. In their study, the biopsy showed HSIL and were associated in cytologic diagnosed as ASCUS in metaplasia cells.
