... Censorship robs us of that right. Television has been a big victim of censorship since its inception. It is my opinion that too many people are up tight over seeing a naked body on television, when we all see our own naked body’s everyday. I feel that the censorship on television is unnecessary and against the first amendment. Debate Statement Television programs have always been targets for censorship. It seems for some reason people think that watching violence on television causes that person to be violent. I watch violence on television and I don’t feel the urge to go out and do violent things because of it. I think if someone can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality then they should be institutionalized. There is a theory called the catharsis hypothesis that has been tested in various studies involving this topic. It basically states that exposure to television violence will reduce subsequent aggression because they saw fantasy, and had it fulfilled, which makes them not feel like they had to do that in real life. Aristotle was a supporter of catharsis. He believed that the audience became psychologically involved with the story on stage, even though they knew it was fiction. He felt when aggression climaxed with the actors, there was a “catharsis” in the audience, which was pleasing to experience and left the audience “cleansed, uplifted, and less likely to act violently among themselves.” Sigmund Freud, a social psychologist, also supports catharsis. He stated that, “Unless people were allowed to express themselves aggressively, the aggressive energy would be dammed up, pressure would build, and the aggressive energy would seek an outlet, either exploding into acts of extreme violence or manifesting itself as symptoms of mental illness.” So ...
