...ng to avoid the situation. In older ages, the pressure is usually not to initially drink, but to drink an excessive amount that the drinker should not take in and can most likely not handle. Many adults are encouraged and instigated to over drink, causing illnesses or the need to repeat such acts. Causing alcoholism by being a prey of peer pressure is foolish and can only cause more damage to oneself. Alcoholism can also be hereditary; therefore caused by genetics. A high number of people have links of alcoholics within their family. Often, if a mother or father suffers alcoholism, their offspring may eventually suffer the same addiction. According to The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, “an estimated 6.6 million children under the age of 18 years live in households with at least one alcoholic parent” (NCADD, pg.6). This great amount of minors, who live with and are influenced by alcoholics, have a great chance of becoming one themselves. Many children see this action daily by their guardians; see it as a normal, usual tendency and not once think of it as a negative act. By not noticing its negativity, it only produces more culprits. It has also been proven that alcoholism is produced by genetics, and sometimes can only be fought off for prevention. There is great value in knowing that parents can cause such addiction, because the offspring can use this information to change his/her ways. When people feel depressed, it causes them to do or feel things way out of their ordinary. People under depression can have the need to drink because they often feel it lessens their pain and sadness. However, “the use of alcohol can produce or be produced by depression” (Alcoholism, par.6).
