...ies, where each can come to his or her own conclusions, and upon those conclusions provide consent to be governed. That philosophy of taking the great ideas from around the globe, and putting them to use to build a greater America, spreads to the very way we collect our citizens. We take the refuse of closed governments and with them build upon an open and diverse, great society that has been the envy of the entire world. Any country can take stands either from a moral or utilitarian angle. For the US there is an ethical problem as the terrorist attacks were directed against innocent people. The terrorists were not waging open war on the US military forces. Innocent people have to be protected from such attacks -- the state's moral duty. But from a larger angle, the political and economic stature of US, endowed with political, economic and military power, has to take up the challenge thrown up by the terrorists. If it fails, its stature will shrink. This may be deemed the utilitarian angle considering the US's special status in the history of the world and the wellbeing of its citizens. Every state has to place the interests of its citizens above those of other states. The threat of terrorism should not be an excuse for any government to stomp on individual rights. The best tribute we can pay to the victims of terrorism and their grieving families and friends is to ensure that justice and not revenge, is served. The issue of people is one that has gained high international publicity and concern. Indeed, the very nature of people and their public place in the major economic centers around the world heightens this concern. It is a problem and an emotional issue as it relates to the most vulnerable and marginalized group in any society: people. The international Medias are keeping the global conscience alive as we see on our television screens refugees salvaging their belongings, emerging from their shelters of plastic sheets full of mud and in a desperate state of hopelessness.
