You know we'll have a good time then.” This is the boy asking his father when he will be home because he really wants to be with his dad. His dad always replies he is not sure when he will be back, but when he gets back they will have a great time. This shows the fathers love for his son even though he doesn’t make time for him. “My son turned ten just the other day. He said, ‘Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play. Can you teach me to throw?’ I said, ‘Not today, I got a lot to do.’” Playing catch is something a father usually does with his son. Yet his father declined because he had a lot of work to do. This is the fathers biggest flaws, he puts work before his family. In my opinion there are two very powerful lines in this song, and this is one of them: Well, he came from college just the other day, So much like a man I just had to say, "Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?" He shook his head, and he said with a smile, "What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys. See you later. Can I have them please?" This shows us that the boy is now independent and now that the father made time to be with him, he doesn’t want to be with his father and instead wants to go out for a spin.
