John Lennon was a very influential leader during the Vietnam War. He was sought after by many especially the government. Some believe Chapman was brainwashed by the government in order to kill Lennon. This is not as far-fetched as it may seem. The FBI had a program that was for in a way hypnotizing people in order to kill some one, so when they hear a certain phrase or say song they automatically must go and kill that specified person. Chapman was chanting "Lennon is a phony therefore he must die." Lennon was indeed a large public leader against the war. His death was morned by many, and many people still have much love for him today. Catcher in the Rye does captivate the readers attention.
