When she asks if she should grow her hair, he tells her to go ahead and leave it as it was; this is not what she was looking for. She was yearning for attention and comfort from him, but he was to busy reading his book. The cat in "Cat in the Rain" symbolizes the woman herself, she is like the kitty in the story, in the rain depressed, cold, and lacking attention. She wants to be rescued just like the cat in the story. She wants to be swept off her feet and given some comfort and love. This is really all that she wants from her husband. But, it seems as though her husband can't be bothered with her, it's as if he finds her annoying. It's almost as if when she asks him about her hair and letting it grow out so she can put in a knot, he tells her to leave it like a boy, because it reflects her immature side.
