As another great American writer, Bob Dylan, once said “times are a-changing,” and that is true since Sandburg’s vision of America was presented yet it has remained the same as a person’s vision of America in the present day. Carl Sandburg saw America as a place for the people and he believed that the people that lived in this free and glorious nation make it the great place that it is today. Carl Sandburg was born on January 6, 1878 to August and Clara Sandburg. Carl’s father was a railroad blacksmith helper. Both of his parents were hardworking Swedish immigrants who met consequently in Chicago. Sandburg’s parents had set high standards for their first boy they had wanted him to work hard, get an education, and one day conquer the “American Dream.” Possibly because of the high standards set by his parents Carl officially ended public school after 8th grade and began to work. Carl’s first jobs were odds and ends such as delivering newspapers, shining shoes, and delivering milk. Sandburg’s thirst for travel made it hard for him to keep a job a stay focused on one place. Because Carl liked traveling so much he enrolled for service in the Spanish-American War. Sandburg like many other writers at the time served until 1898.
