...nces. Mac and the Boys are homeless and live on Cannery Row. They are very dirty and do not have jobs. Most people that see a person like Mac or one of the boys would more than likely not want anything to do with him or her. They would probably waltz directly pass the dirty person as if he or she were not even there. In most cases people like Mac and the Boys are simply looked down upon as a burden to society; they are not acknowledged as a real person on any accord. This kind of harsh treatment is very sad, especially when we have no idea what that person may have endured earlier in his or her life. Doc is the kind of person who manages to overlook appearances and sees the person for whom he or she really is. Doc, unlike many people, is able to ignore the fact that Mac and the Boys are homeless. He only sees their kind hearts and good intentions. Doc tries to help Mac and the Boys by giving them small jobs of capturing specific creatures for him. Mac and the Boys feel lucky to be able to help their good friend, Doc, and to receive money while doing it. Mac and the Boys show great loyalty towards Doc. They also, like many on Cannery Row, have a large amount of respect for Doc. Doc sees this and realizes what true friends Mac and the Boys really are. Mac and the Boys even try to throw Doc a surprise party when he comes back home. Like good friends, Mac and the Boys do everything they can to assist Doc with whatever he may need. They even try to get Doc and Susie together, as best they can. Even though Mac and the Boys are not extremely bright, they try their best and put their whole heart into everything they do for Doc.
