The affects off this acculturation can be noted in the participating gods, their followers, and the musical involvement of worship. The Portuguese shipped in an estimated 3.6 million Africans to Brazil over four centuries, Brazil being the last country to abolish slavery (Steele). Most of the slaves that came to Brazil were the Bantu people of West Africa, an area known as Nigeria, Benin, and Togo. Yoruba was the primary religion practiced in these areas at the time of their capture, which is still practiced today, but is beginning to fade as Christianity and Islam overtake it. During the process of slave traffic they would lose their identity and personality; but their roots, history, and cultural experiences came with them.
