The more rapid and the colder the temperature, the more cells of the abscission layer die. The abscission layer cells are temperature sensitive. As the cells of the abscission die, they cut off the supply of raw material too the leaf. Without these raw materials the leaf can’t produce chlorophyll A (The most complex chlorophyll). With less and less raw materials entering the leaf the leaf is forced to try and manufacture pigments, which require fewer raw materials to make. The production of these accessory pigments results in the various colors being seen (such as yellow also known as Xanthophyll). In the fall my leaves change colors just like many leaves in the northeast U.S. I can see that the other accessory pigments are in my leaf by looking at my filter disk. On the drawing of my leaf I can see a light pee green, I can also see a light pee green on the filter paper. I can see yellow and light shades of brown on both my leaf and my filter paper.
