Can a rapist be reformed?

...ere abused but can control and discipline themselves and get help, do they deserve some type of credit? Moreover, some unfortunately choose to allow their hurt and anger to be an excuse about why they abuse and hurt others. “When tempted to satisfy sexual urges by using children as sex objects, they could have chosen otherwise.” Their actions are not driven uncontrollably and solely by a bad childhood experience. It’s just the excuse used to avoid punishment such as jail time. Does a rapist serve time in jail for their behavior? According to the New York Times, in ’99, a judge in New Jersey ignored the reality that a 43-year-old teacher was sexually exploiting a seventh grader. The judge then stated, “It’s just something between two people the clicked beyond the teacher-student relationship, and I really don’t see the harm that was done and certainly society doesn’t need to be worried.” If a judge could ignore something like that and make such a statement, then what should society do? I guess, don’t worry about it. On many occasions a rapist have gotten off freely. One example of a convicted child rapist that got no jail time is the case of Pamela Diehl-moore. A New Jersey judge, Bruce Gaeta has decided to ignore the reality of the situation, in favor of his own Van Halen- inspired fantasies and has refused to sentence a teacher convicted of child rape, to prison. He did so believing that no harm was done in the situation. According to the judge, when 43 year old teacher, Pamela Diehl-Moore sexually exploited a seventh grade boy in ’99, “It was just something between two people the clicked beyond the teacher- student relationship.” He then showered us with further insight that, “I really don’t see the harm that was done and certainly, society doesn’t need to be worried.” I believe that a judge is supposed to set order to and see that justice is served. Enforce the law on those sex offenders so that they can learn from their mistakes. Rapists or sex offenders are sometimes ‘born’ out of a bad childhood experience. It is in my experience and knowledge that there is a majority of males being molested or raped by a relative at a young age. This, although at the time, may seem all right to the child, it is sending a message, mentally and emotionally that it is OK that it is right for something like that to occur. A prime example of this situation would be an article about a guy named Bob Smith, a sex offender/ child molester. Smith molested his 12-year-old stepdaughter when he was 34 years of age. Ironically, the same thing happened to him when he was 12 and also by a 34-year-old relative. He now blames his sexual encounter as the reason why he molested his stepdaughter. He states, “I’m doing what was done to me.” This is so for many sex offenders. They are just doing what was done to them. For the few who feels remorse for their actions, the option of chemical castration has been introduced as a new form of both punishment and rehabilitation. In Smith’s case, the judge gave him ten years probation with treatment but smith voluntarily made the decision to be chemically castrated. This shows that Smith, like others who regret their actions can live a healthy life free from sexual urges that may drive them to rape or molest others. “With the medication, the obsession is gone. I can understand and empathize better with the victim. I can recognize that what I’ve done is socially and morally unacceptable. I can acknowledge that I am a child molester,” Smith admits. Like Smith, many sex offenders eat, sleep and dream about sex, but this process of chemical castration helps in that it takes away the sex offender’s sex drive. However, most s...
