The dogs made several long runs for Perrault and Francois including a record run. Buck and Spitz quarreled among themselves each fighting for supremacy. Francois told Perrault that one-day one of the dogs would kill the other. One night Francois’s prediction came true. While chasing a rabbit, Buck and Spitz got into what was to be the fight to the end. Each dog fought hard but Buck prevailed. Francois was proud of Buck. When they reached Skagway, the dogs were sold to a French half-breed. Their job was to hall mail. While it was not glorious or easy, the dogs did it with all of their heart. They traveled nearly 1,500 miles hauling mail back and forth. The dogs became very tired but still worked hard. Then, they were sold to three people who had just came up from the U.S.A. and knew nothing about dogs or the ways of the north. The dogs were tired and needed rest, but the people were ignorant and made the dogs make a long trip with a heavy load anyway. They were making poor time because all of the dogs were in such poor condition. Buck ran out of energy at a man named John Thornton’s camp. The people beat Buck to make him go but he would not. Finally, John Thornton took Buck from them. As they watched the sled and dogs slowly go across the ice, they saw them break through and disappear forever. His friends left behind John Thornton because his feet had become frost bitten. He was waiting until spring when they would come down the river on a raft. John became the first man that Buck had ever truly loved. He would do anything that John asked of him. When his friends finally showed up they all got on a raft and headed down the river. John Thornton was knocked off the raft and was clinging for his life to a rock. John’s friends attached a rope to Buck and sent him into the river.
