Pete is the ultimate provider, he not only provides for himself and his family but also for Donald. He pays his medical bills, he lends him money, provides shelter, pays for food. Donald on the other hand thinks that he can be sustained by spiritual food alone and it is in his spiritual quest that he spend most of his time. He questions his brother’s lifestyle and even attepmts to gain his soul. He ironically askes, what are you doing of your life brohter? The brothers tug at each other’s emotiones and attempt to win the small psycologiacal wars that they play with each other. Pete is open and outspoken about his ideas and emotions, Donald is covert and even judgemental of Pete’s life. Pete appears strong in the outer but reveals himself weak in the emotional arena, even dreams of his brother Donald being his helper and guide. Donald is depicted as a thin and weak individual that lacks direction in life but is able to cope with misfurtune based on his own spiritual fortitued. The brothers are in constant contrast with each other. They are ends of the same spectrum. Absolutely essential to each other. First the story offers the description of the brothers, the contrast between them is sharp and clear. Pete is strong, capable and successful in world affarirs, the author describes him as, at home in the world. Donald is weak, thin and obssesed with the fate of his soul. Then the author elaborates on their personal stories and how the also take opposite directions, one a successful real state agent, the other occasional handyman, farmer and spiritual seeker. At the center of the story there is their interaccion during the car ride they share with a con artist. During this ride the true nature of their relationship is revealed. Pete seeks to help Donald only to find that no help would be enough to fix his brother and Donald attepts to explain to his brother the need for spiritual foundation in his life. They both become frustrated with each other and decide to part ways. At the end of the story is clear that Pete will return to pick up his brother. Why? Why would he go back to pick up the burden of Donald. Donald justifyes Pete’s existence. It gives meaning to his endevours.
