In the end, it was essentially Antony’s speech that influenced the people and lead to the downfall of Brutus and the rest of the conspirators. Brutus was the first to speak. He approached the crowd with blood dripping from his hands stating his reason for killing Caesar. Brutus claimed, “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more.” (III,ii,21-22) This quote originally appealed to the crowd because they thought it was for the best of their country and that his ambition would have hurt Rome. To achieve his goals, Brutus’ oratory techniques were simple, logical and rational. His speech was formal and the sentences were a perfect way to persuade the crowd and originally worked. Brutus did a very good job at explaining to the crowd that the murder of Caesar was for the good of Rome; however, he still hadn’t won them over. Brutus fled the scene leaving Antony to deliver the final speech. Antony used sarcasm as a powerful tool in his speech to turn the citizens away from Brutus. He kept mentioning about how Brutus was an honorable man but in reality, he meant the opposite. He used repetition to create this sense of sarcasm about Brutus and the other conspirators.
