It may be upsetting to some people, but it is a constitutional right, a freedom that should be enjoyed by all Americans. To make an amendment to protect the flag would contradict the first amendment, since it would limit the freedom of the people. It would be hypocritical to say that someone doesn't have the freedom to burn the American symbol of freedom. Some patriotic Americans might argue that burning the flag is an unnecessary violent act. People have died for what the flag represents, and there are other, less offensive ways to express views. This is true, but if you want to get a point across, violence and offensive acts will get the most attention. Not only that, but if someone is so patriotic and passionate about the flag, shouldn't they feel just as strongly about what it represents? I don't think protecting the flag is as important as protecting what that flag stands for, and that is freedom. I am patriotic, and when I see the flag I feel proud and honored to be an American.
