Benjamin Franklin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston. He was one of seventeen children. He left school when he was ten to work for his father. He worked there for two years before he became an apprentice to his older brother, a printer. At the age of seventeen he moved to Philadelphia, in hopes of opening his own print shop. Franklin eventually started his own newspaper, and the Poor Richard’s Almanack. The Almanack became very popular and established Ben as a talented writer. At the age of 42 Franklin retired and devoted him self to the world of science. Being even more successful as a scientist, Franklin invented among other things, the lightning rod, bifocals, and contributed great to the study of ocean currents and earthquakes.
