Then the British took Gabriel to be hung as a spy, although there was no such evidence to make that assumption on him. There was no reason for the soldiers to do any of this; it was just insensible violence. Later in the movie Aunt Charlotte?s plantation was searched and burned by the British. Their tactics were to either capture or kill Ben?s children so he would become enraged and brashly attack the British without even thinking of strategy, getting him out of the war. To the British? surprise, Aunt Charlotte and her children escaped thanks to Ben and the militia. The plantation was burned and the slaves were killed but the outcome could?ve been a lot worse if it weren?t for Ben. When the British got to the town from which most of the militia resided (where Anne lived), they performed their most brutal act from the whole movie. They piled all the townspeople into the church and asked where the militia was hiding.
