Brazil fought well in italy considering that they are a Latin American country. After the war had ended, the United States became the greatest influence on Brazil. Brazil was an original founding member of the United Nations in 1945. During the cold war era, Brazil sided with the United States. Brazil believed that containing communist parties around the world must begin domestically, therefore communism was illegal in Brazil. In 1964 a Brazilian Coup was the first to attempt the prevention of communism. The United States helped with financial funding and military training. -4- The U.S wanted to stop another "Cuba" from occurring. By 1974 after the middle East War of 1973, which led to a dramatic increase in the price of oil. All importers of oil was left in a tough situation. All of Brazil's oil is imported, so Brazil was left in a difficult situation. Brazil thought the U.S would help by supplying them with oil, but the United States did not. Brazil had then felt let down by the United States and changed its foreign policy to not reflect U.S interest. Brazil started to recognize communist governments in the Republic of China, Mozambique and Angola. Due to the fact that these countries were communist they were not yet recognized by the United States. Brazil was still in need for oil at this time. Relations grew stronger between Iraq and Brazil and weapons were then traded for oil. This started the Arms Industry in Brazil. Brazil started to sell small weapons to different countries and develop nuclear power for energy and military purposes. The new Foreign Policy of Brazil stirred up conflict with the United States. Japan took a major interest in Brazil and started to invest in the country. Now Brazil is Japans second largest trading partner. The Middle East grew closer to Brazil as chicken and weapons were sold for oil. The Carter Administration complained about the Human rights issue in Brazil -5- which led to political problems. Brazil use to always support the United States 100, now Brazil 75% of the time is against the United States. By the early 80's the dept crisis occurred. Brazil knew for sure that U.S had other interest besides the Latin American Community. Brazil developed the same problems most Latin American counties endured. By the mid-eighties, Argentina and Brazil started to talk about economic development. In the past decade these two countries were competing in nuclear development for some time.
