... Beta, Beta-, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, and Epsilon semi-morons, with the last comprising those citizens of the lowest intelligence. Each class is conditioned to love its type of work and its place in society. Outside of their work, people spend their lives in constant pleasure. This involves consuming. They continually buy new things, whether they need them or not. They also participate in elaborate sports and free-floating sex. The story concerns Bernard, an Alpha whose programming is a bit off. He is discontented and desires to spend time alone just thinking or looking at the stars. Because of this he shall be displaced to Iceland. The beginning chapters describe the brave new world as the D. H. C. (the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning) gives a group of children a tour of the facility. Lenina Crowne has been dating Henry Foster for some time and starts dating Bernard Marx to prove she is not engaging in courtship, which is unheard of in the civilisation. Bernard and Lenina go on a vacation to the New Mexico reservations and meet Linda and her son John. Bernard discovers that Linda was impregnated by the C. H. C. and that John is his son. Bernard and Lenina bring John and Linda back to civilisation with them for research purposes. Bernard learns that the D. H. C. is about to exile him for his ‘uncivilised’ behaviour when they return back to civilisation. Bernard calls John and Linda from the next room and they call upon the director as son and wife. Bernard is saved from being sent into exile. Bernard becomes very popular in the civilisation due to the connections he has with John, the Savage. Bernard’s friend Helmholtz befriends John and they share literature with each other. John does not like the civilisation and becomes more and more disgusted with each day that goes by. Lenina develops an infatuated passion for John and constantly seeks him out. John thinks of Lenina very highly until she makes advances at him that are against his morals. He gets extremely upset one evening when Lenina makes a sexual advance towards him. John even hits her and calls her a strumpet. Soon after that incident John’s mother dies. John is furious with the ‘brave new world’ and goes crazy. He tries to make a riot. He lectures ...
