You notice at once of Beans almost superhuman intelligence, mainly because he can remember everything he has ever seen or heard, also how he later recalls memories of him being an infant, just months old. As far as he can guess he is around 4 years old, but is still very small and appears a lot younger to everyone else. He knows that he is starving to death but eventually comes up with an idea to help out a crew, or group of kids, which lets him join their group and also attracts the attention of an adult which brings him to the children training facility in outer space dubbed “Battle School.’ Here Bean scores perfect on every test and eventually is placed in the group that will defend Earth from the Buggers invasion. Which Bean as already figured out that is not going to happen and the training simulations of a Bugger assault the children are doing is actually the real life attack happening light-years away that the other children are unknowingly commanding. As the children celebrate their victory of the “simulated” invasion Bean tells them it is real, and they all are heroes for saving the world and destroying the Buggers. There are several main characters in the story, mainly Bean and his antagonist Achilles. He is from the streets of Rotterdam like Bean and becomes the leader of the crew there. Later he kills Poke, the former leader, and blames it on another child, but Bean saw him commit the murder. When Bean goes to Battle School he insists that his recruiter not send Achilles because he believes he will try to kill Bean as well. Later, Achilles is sent anyway but Bean caches him in a trap and forces him to confess his crimes on tape or else be killed.
