It was then was promised that if all the animals worked to their capabilities they would get the work back in rations. Originally this idea worked, until one pig became power hungry and took over the whole farm. This pig was Napoleon. Napoleon and his fellow pigs gave all the other animals unfair hours of labor and unfair rations for their work, because of the inequality between the animals, it corrupted the government. He kept the animals together by teaching them slogans to say while they worked, "Napoleon is always right." and "I will work harder"(40). Another reason the society ran smoothly was because no animal would refuse to do their job because of the fear of starvation. Napoleon would tell them that they could not eat unless they did their work. Napoleon stated that “all animals would have to work voluntary Sunday afternoons, but any animal who absented himself from it would have his ration reduced by half”(P. 42).
