When this information was released in the United States it created an uproar that heightened the tensions that led to restricting acts like the Sedition and Alien Acts. In the cartoon “Paris Monster” it clearly shows how much the people of the United States’ opinion of the French was changed by the XYZ Affair due to the fact that they represent the French as greedy pigs whom only want money. In a letter to Thomas Jefferson from James Madison, there is a hint of the tension that is building in the country, and shows the conflict between the political parties at this time period. The letter also shows the hatred towards the French that has been created by the XYZ Affair when Madison quotes Adams, “He remarked to me ‘that not a single principle that same in the American & French Revolutions’”. During the year 1798, the Sedition and Alien Acts were proposed, these acts severely limited the constitutional freedom of immigrants. The Alien Acts gave the President the power to imprison or deport aliens suspects of activities posing a threat to the national government. The Sedition Act removed some of the freedoms from immigrants such as freedom of speech and freedom of the press. In a letter to Francis Hopkinson of Pennsylvania from Thomas Jefferson, a heated argument started over these two acts. In this letter, Jefferson states that he is strongly against these Acts, he states that it is, “The last degradation of a free and moral agent”, which states that it is the worst thing that could be added to the government. Jefferson believes that all men are equal even if they aren’t American Citizens and should not be punished for being immigrants. The Alien and Sedition Acts could have serious consequences on the United States according to some. In a letter from Alexander Hamilton to the secretary of the treasury, he speaks about how these acts could possible create a civil war in the United States due to the fear of deportation that the immigrants might have.
