In this novel, Antonio’s dreams are very important. They are the insights to his inner thoughts and feelings and provide a foreshadowing of events to come. One of Antonio’s dreams in chapter 11 pictured his mother and father fighting for the right to mold him into the person they wanted him to become. Recalling in chapter four, Ultima stated that the moon represented Luna’s and the seas represented Marez. Well into the dream, Antonio was pleading for his question to be answered. “Was it the moon or the sea’s water that ran through his veins?” After all the bickering, Ultima finally stated that “the waters are one… and it is the great cycle that binds us all.” I believe Ultima is trying to say that it isn’t the decision of the moon or the sea for the waters to flow, but the waters choice only. The moon and the sea are basically there to guide the water on the right path, ensuring it does not become lost. The final dream Antonio experienced wraps up the entire book. In this dream, Antonio sees his friends killing one another and also encounters the three men who he saw die. With all of the violence and sadness Antonio witnessed, these traumatic ordeals soon destroyed his whole belief system of religion, as was symbolized by the dismantling of the church, the death of the Golden Carp, and the murder of Ultima.
