The issue at stake in pornography debate is nothing less than the age-old conflict between individual freedom and social control. - There is nothing wrong with pornography! - It is only as dirty or wrong as the ways in which it is used. Introduction - Three things I will talk about that are the most popular issues that are brought up. o Pornography is Degrading o Pornography leads to violence against women o Pornography in Law and its purpose Pornography is Degrading - ‘Degrading’ is a subjective term - I find commercials in which women becoming orgasmic over soapsuds to be tremendously degrading. - Degrading is linked to ‘objectification’ in which people think porn converts women into sexual objects - If taken literally it is false because objects don’t have sexuality only beings do. - Usually the term ‘sex objects’ means showing women as ‘body parts’ reducing them to physical objects. What is wrong with this? - No one gets upset if you present women as ‘brains’ or ‘spiritual beings’ - If I concentrated on a woman’s sense of humor is this degrading??? So why is it degrading to focus on her sexuality? - Bottom line is that every woman has the right to define what is degrading and liberating for herself.
