...on rate; this will lead to a problem of resource starvation and deprivation in a matter of time. According to Thomas Malthus, the population growth rate increases exponentially when it is “unchecked”. This is proven to be true with the population of the human race doubling time’s getting smaller and smaller as we see it. He also states that the rate of food production does not follow the same curve as the population growth rate, but it is linear (Malthus, 398). The problem defined by these statements is that one day the food production will not meet the demand of the population. This may seems to be a distant problem, but the consequences (massive starvation, premature deaths) from it are enough for us to take a look at it then not care at all. Malthus has shown us in his essay that the likelihood of a problem from an unchecked population is far greater than that of no problem. This seems to be, because his postulate on the growth rate of human population is already proven to be true. But how did the human population went unchecked? To address this problem we must look at Garrett Hardin’s “Tragedy of the Commons.” According Hardin, the welfare systems that human set up can only lead to a tragedy (Hardin, 369). In his essay Hardin explains that the problem that we have with the human population is that we are treating human’s babies as a commons. We are also treating the rights of every family to have children as a commons. As Hardin sees it, the social system that we have let people have more babies even though they don’t have the necessity to take care of them. This is due to the fact that our social systems make other share the responsibilities in terms of welfare for the family, where the welfare money is derived from taxes. As we treat things as commons we tend to disregard of what the result of our action is (Hardin, 36...
