On the bus ride to Mississippi a young man named bill Williams explained to griffin how a Negro had to act in the Deep South; in the Deep South a black man couldn’t even look in the direction of a white woman without being harassed. There were also various other people, whose names were not mentioned, throughout the story who helped Griffin. 3.) There are many times when griffin experiences prejudice throughout the story. Many of the instances where he encounters prejudices he is simply walking into a store and they refuse to sell to him. Often he drifts into a store requesting to use to bathroom and they deny him this basic privilege that no one should be denied. At one point in the story a young white boy follows him for several blocks and harasses him telling him if he stops he is going to assault him. At another point in the story he is running low on money and wishes to cash some travelers checks. Griffin walks into several stores and they all refuse to cash his checks saying that he probably stole them. Finally someone at a catholic bookstore cashes his checks. On the bus going down to Mississippi the driver refuses to let the blacks off the bus to use the restroom even though he has already let the whites off. Throughout the entire time Griffin is black people are harassing him. 4.) I think it is terrible that someone could be treated this badly because of the color of his skin. It confuses me that the same person with the same morals can walk into a store and be treated badly simply because he turned his skin black. I think that Griffin has a right to feel inferior to the whites because people are treating him like he is a peasant under the rule of a tyrant. I was also astounded at the reactions people had to griffin as a black man. Sometimes Griffin would walk into a store and be able to feel the hatred from the looks people were giving him. I think that Griffin was a very brave man for putting up with this cruelty even though he could have stopped at any time.
