An RPG missile fired by one of the many Somalians, that carried them, caused this. Another helicopter spotted seven survivors and reported it immediately. A plan was established to make a very dangerous effort to rescue these men which established the phrase “leave no man behind”. Words that gained deep respect among the soldiers. The soldier in the black hawk was rescued, but was shot three times while holding off the Somalians. Soon after this another black hawk was shot down, but this time the only people that could reach the survivors were thousands of Somalians and two delta force commandos that volunteered to try to reach them despite the seemingly impossible task. When they reached the helicopter they found the pilot, but were soon surrounded by at least a thousand Somalians and were killed. The pilot who was captured alive was eventually turned over to the Americans. The delta force volunteers received the medal of honor for their heroism.
