Bipolar II, is when the depression phase overruns the mania, therefore there isn’t really a true mania. There are occasional periods of higher moods and energy, which will make the person somewhat in tune with reality. It is commonly mistaken for depression because most people do not complain about being happy and energetic. Bipolar Disorder will usually appear around the age of twenty-five. Men and women are equally affected by this disorder, and it is unusual to see children that have it. The cause is unknown but it is likely that it is passed down through genetics. The episodes can last from a week, a month, or even years. There is no way that you can prevent this condition from happening to you. Regier and Kealber conducted a study in 1995 and it was said that approximately 1% of Americans had Bipolar disorder. The most common symptom associated with this disorder is the spontaneous mood swings one will have from mania to depression. For some people these episodes can last weeks, months or even a year or more. The person is either manic or they suffer from depressive episodes that can actually overpower the manic stage, thus making the person extremely depressed and they will have fewer mood swings. Some people are known to have rapid cycles of mania to depression because their moods can change several times a day, this is uncommon but it does happen. Others suffer from mixed states. This is when they are in a state of mania and depression. Their thoughts overlap each other and they are not really aware of their true emotions. Mixed states are most common in the rare cases of bipolar disorder in children. Psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison describes her person experience with mania: “ There are many available treatments for those who need it.
