...ted in his parents’ bedroom and his dad said “There will come nothing of this boy.” Freud says that he often pictured himself going back to his dad later and saying “You see, nevertheless I became somebody!” (Chiriac, 1999) Sigmund Freud was always a very bright student. He attended school at the University of Vienna. Freud began doing research under the instruction of Ernst Brucke, the famous psychologist, between 1876 and 1881. Due to the fact that financial prospects in research were so deprived, Freud took his M.D. Degree in 1881. In 1885, a traveling grant was given to him to go to Paris for several months. There he studied with the most famous neurologist of the day, Jean Charcot. Here Freud made his first characteristic Freud-4 psychological observation, noting that the parts of the body liable to hysterical paralysis or anesthesia did not correspond to real functional demarcations. (Chiriac, 1999) When he returned to Vienna he decided to start a private practice of his own as a neurologist. That same year he married his wife, Martha Bernays, and eventually they had six children together. Freud realized the he would not be able to support a family with neurological research so he began medical practice at General Hospital of Vienna and also at the Meynerts Institute of Cerebral Anatomy. His publications on disorders of the nervous system led him to become a “Privaldocent,” a lecturer, at the University of Vienna. Approximately twenty years later, Freud became a “Professor Extraordinarius ,” or Associate Professor. Finally, in 1920, he became a full Professor. (Palladino, 2002) Sadly, Sigmund Freud developed cancer of the jaw in 1923 and after a lot of suffering and thirty three surgeries, Freud died in 1939.
