Children’s nonfiction should be written with current and accurate facts as well as good quality characters. The books should be attractive, and stereotypes must be avoided. Nothing irritates me more that when I am reading something and an ethnic group is so obviously stereotyped. There are many types of biographies. Authentic biographies are all about facts documented and letters and eye witness accounts. Fictionalized biographies are about dramatic scenes based on facts and imagined conversations. Biographical fiction opens doors for invented dialogue and fictional characters. Informational books are the largest genre in children’s literature. Biological science is about living organisms and the laws and phenomena surrounding them. Physical science is about nonliving things such as the ocean, mountains, weather, etc. I absolutely love reading about the ocean and the way the tide is controlled by the moon. It fascinates me.
