Other than that, every single person likes him. Even his elders respect him. He works on a merchant ship called “Rights of Man”. Since the war was going on, and there is shortage of people in the navy, people are forced to fight in British’s defense. The only person chosen off the merchant ship was Billy Budd. No one wanted to let him go because he was the pride and joy of the ship. It really didn’t affect Billy much, because it wasn’t like he had family to go home to. He was abandoned as an infant. As I was reading this, it made me feel very sympathetic towards Billy. What is surprising and ironic is that Billy had absolutely no say in whether he wanted to leave the merchant ship.
