When the land of Hrothgar is described there is said to be a “glow across the land (l 10). The sight described that the men in Beowulf’s ship saw as the approached is said to be “sparkling hill, high and green (l 136).” Grendel’s mother’s home under the lake is seen from above and is said to look like “mist steams like black clouds, and the groves of trees growing out over their lake are all covered with frozen spray (l 426-429).” When a character in the story is defeated or triumphs then like and dark imagery is used to show that.
