...o. When Sethe first saw Beloved at their house, Sethe has to relieve herself behind the house which reminds her of when her water broke in the boat before she gave birth to Denver. This is the beginning of their life with Beloved. They see her and take her in. Beloved destroys their life as it was and makes them begin a new life with her. Second, escape from slavery is used as a water symbol for a new beginning for Sethe and for Paul D. When Sethe finally gets to Baby Suggs home from escaping from Sweet Home, Baby Suggs washes and gives Sethe a bath. This water represents Sethe’s new life at 124. In order to escape from Sweet Home Sethe has to cross the Ohio River. The Ohio River is what separated the South from the North and her freedom. When she crosses the river she knows she is on her way to a new beginning, because she is now free. “The water was above his ankles, flowing over the wooden plank he slept on” (Morrison 116). This quote is talking about what Paul D was doing at the camp in Georgia. It started raining, which created the mud the prisoners would need to escape. This escape leads to his new life with Sethe.
