Brian thought he could write the songs, but what would he write about? Dennis had a bright idea. Dennis suggested to the group that they should sing about surfing. Dennis loved surfing and no one else was doing surfing music at the time. Brian wrote the music and Mike wrote the lyrics. The results were a fast, catchy song called Surfin. It was the first of many songs that Brian Wilson wrote. Now that they had catchy tunes, they needed a catchy name. The Group Name If the group wanted to make records, and go down in history, they needed a catchy name to be remembered by. They began as Kenny and the Cadets, then Carl and the Passions, and finally The Pendletones. Brian began teaching the others intricate harmonies. Murry Wilson took the boys to his publisher " Hite Morgan " who then took them to Keen recording studios. Brian then wrote Surfin and with Mike wrote Surfin Safari. They both became a big hit. On December eighth, Newman signed the group. Ross Regan, Era's promotion man, suggested that they change their name's to "The Beach Boys ". Since then, they have been called The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys had now made many terriffic hits, but there was a year yet to come that they would never forget. Band of the Year In December of 1973, The Beach Boys released a double concert album called The Beach Boys in concert. The album included twenty-five of their greatest hits. The old songs were popular, but they needed new music, fast. In 1976, Brian agreed to produce a new record. The album was called Fifteen Big Ones. It was to remind everyone that The Beach Boys band was fifteen years old. Rolling Stone Magazine named The Beach Boys," Band Of The Year" for 1974. It was a year that they would never forget. In July, Brian played the piano for the band at a concert, which was his first appearance on stage in twelve years. In October, the group set-up a studio in Hawaii. The move led to more good music. Mike Love was singing well, and fans were happy to hear Brian's voice again. This time the album was called M.I.U, and it came out in the fall of 1978. Even though the group was going fairly smooth, they had yet to conquer the major problem in their career.
