Kiley thinking that the Germans were up to something, was that the Germans were looking for anyone who spoke English. They were looking for English speakers so that they could disguise them as American MP’s. These English speaking Germans got into Belgium by parachuting off of a plane. So these tanks just came rolling in, with the help of the MP’s making the way for them. The Germans took over Ambleve, and tried to invade Bastogne but instead just went around it. Finally Gen. Grey came up with the idea to waste all of the Germans gas from the tanks, since they were already running low. They were going to attack them with their tanks at the river Meuse before they got to the fuel stop. In the end Col. Hessler died from one of his tanks being blown up and the rest of the Germans had to abandon their tanks, and walked back to Germany. There were three main characters in this movie. There was Lt. Col. Kiley played by Henry Fonda who was an ex-cop whose instincts lead him straight to the German plan-and into conflict with his skeptical superiors. Then there was Col. Hessler played by Robert Shaw who was in charge of all the tanks heading into Belgium and Luxembourg. Last there was Gen. Grey played by Robert Ryan who was the main guy in charge on the Allied side during this battle. Here are the actual facts from this battle.
