Banning Smoking on Campus

In SJSU, there are already several regulations that permit where a person is able to smoke freely without the student anti-smoking group, Campuses Organized &United for Good Health (COUGH), giving firm penalties to those who break the campus rules. “California state law prohibits smoking inside all state buildings and [smoking] is restricted [to outside,] fifteen feet away from an entrance or an exit of a building.” With so many regulations of where it is legal to smoke, the rights of smokers are already violated and taken away. United States of America built its foundations on freedom and equality; however, it had decided to segregate people from smokers and non-smokers with giving them restrictions of where to smoke. While a smoker does not receive the equal amount of equality, thus, it would alienate smokers and violate their rights as adults at a greater degree if President Caret decides to ban smoking on SJSU campus. The eighteenth birthday marks the approaching adulthood of each person. Eighteen is the age where teenagers are given a certain amount of responsibilities, privileges and are allowed to comport themselves as they wish. The responsibilities of an eighteen year old could range from signing a legal document to opening a checking account at a bank, or even legally buying nicotine. As adulthood is opened up to an eighteen year old, they are able to publicly smoke if they wish. College also marks the approaching of adulthood where college allows certain amounts of opportunities for the students to act upon at their wish. Smoking should not be banned at SJSU, as it precludes this wish for some students. To some, smoking is a form of stress relief and calms them down right before a final examination. Smoking induces an alertness that keeps a person awake at nite to continue studying. “Smoking is as collegiate as coffee, pizza and ibuprofen.” Banning smoking on campus is comparable to banning coffee on campus. Matt McDonald said, “It’s wrong to ban people from doing certain things,” thus, President Caret should not act on banning smoking on campus. As stated before, citizens of USA have rights to conduct themselves in any way or manner, so long as; it does not detract other’s rights. If specific regulations are made for smokers to be able to smoke in specified places, it segregates them from other citizens.
