Since learning how to prepare your house for auction, installing a garden water feature, or decide which wine and cheese you should chow down on together, are quite low on adolescence’s list of high priorities, they settle for the all-American drama’s i.e., Young Americans, Dawson’s Creek, Friends and as you know the list goes on. We are referring to the tactless, materialist, international influence that America is having on Australia today, as what America has to offer is not part of our national culture; such influence can rather be described as being “anti-national culture” or globalisation. Globalisation is not a single phenomenon. It has become a catchall concept to describe a range of trends and forces changing the face of the world in which we live. The domination of American programs on Australian television says a lot about the impression America has globally. While the ABC and the SBS are still occupied by Australian and British programs, channel 10 and in particular pay-tv is run by the corporate America. America is a key player in the world’s economy, wars, entertainment and all because it is established financially and technologically, ahead of many other countries. There is not one person that has not heard of America, however American it not the largest country, and nor is it the most densely populated or the richest, but it is the most established and has quite an impact on the rest of the world. The effect it has on each country nevertheless is different. To Australia, America is our “big-brother”. Just like brothers America sets and example, which however much Australia protest to turn out the same as them, it still happen. America, in this view, is both subjectively, or self-servingly, and objectively the purveyor of destructive globalisation, leading the world down the road of unsustainable development, the destruction of national cultures and non-Western civilisations, and ultimately the death of culture.
