Atticus “Defender of Innocence”
...ruly a fair man, “Atticus says cheatin’ a colored man is ten times worse than cheatin’ a white man, says it’s the worst thing you can do.” (201) Atticus would never try to cheat anyone out of anything. He would defend anybody no matter what their skin color is all the way to the end. “I shall be brief, but I would like to use my remaining time with you to remind you that this case is not a difficult one, it requires no minute sifting of complicated facts, but it does require you to be sure beyond all reasonable doubt as to the guilt of the defendant. To begin with, this case should never have come to trail. This case is as simple as black and white.” (203) Atticus is the kind of man that can find the good points of anyone. You have to be a very wise person to be able to do this. “You know, she was a great lady.” (112) He is also the kind of man that can always answer Jem and Scouts many questions. “When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em.” (ch. 9) Finally Atticus is a calm man; he is always calm, even in the worst of situations. “I wish Bob Ewell wouldn’t chew tobacco.” (217) He won’t fight back n...
