Another hint the author gives the reader of Charlotte having a controlling mother is the description of their house. It is described as having “black and white” all over; the cupboards and walls were a “blinding spotless white” and even the scrap paper that her mother wrote the note to Charlotte wasn’t even scrap paper, it was written on “flawless script” (Wilson P. ). Her mother is a controlling perfectionist whom thrives on control and order over those around her. This attitude has a rippling effect on her daughter, her husband and even Charlotte’s friends. In Charlotte’s first metaphor in class she described her mother as a “flawless, modern building with smooth pale concrete” (Wilson P. ). This shows that Charlotte is aware of her mother’s dullness due to her over-attention of always having control. Charlotte’s friends even realize and comment on her mother. Whenever they come to visit (which isn’t too often), they “marveled on how serene her mother looked”, they say that she “never looks frazzled, rushed or angry” (Wilson P. ).
