This was an important issue because it was recognised that Nazism’s future depended on the youth. As a result, the German education system was nazified and children were conditioned to believe in Nazi ideology. Education of the children of Germany extended beyond the classroom and out of school activities organised by the Nazis became an extremely important part of the lives of the German youth, and were another way of teaching the children Nazi ideas. Groups such as the Hitler Youth became compulsory, and were important mechanisms for shaping a new generation of Nazis. The changes made by the Nazis to the education of children was extremely important as they helped to spread Nazi ideology and were therefore an important tool in the nazification of German society. The Nazis also changed the role of religion in German society. Although the Nazi Twenty-five-point Programme promised religious freedom, the Nazis were fairly anti-Christian. In 1933, Hitler signed the Concordat, which was an agreement between Hitler and the Pope. In return for religious freedom, the Pope agreed that the Church would not play any role in politics. However, by 1936, the Nazi Party had begun the process of reducing the power of the Church. Attacks on the churches increased and many policies were implemented which reduced the freedom of the Church. For example, priests were forced to apply for licences and religious teachers had to be approved by the state. Many religious leaders who openly opposed the Nazis were arrested and sent to concentrations camps. Through their actions, the Nazi’s were able to greatly reduce the power of the Church. This was an extremely significant change as previously, the Church had been an extremely powerful and influential party of society. Therefore, in terms of the role of religion in German society, the Nazis had brought about a very important change and had thus had a great impact. Another area of German life which underwent great change was the arts. All aspects of art and culture were controlled by the Nazis. All forms of art, books, theatre and film which were considered to be “un-German” were banned and in the case of books and art, were often burned or destroyed. All forms of art had to conform to the Nazi code and anything which did not conform to Nazi ideas was banned. This censorship of art and culture had a significant impact on German society as it meant that the people of Germany were not exposed to anything which went against Nazi ideology. Nazi racial policy brought about one of the most important and significant changes to German society.
