At the beginning of the article the publisher asked a questionto other publishers of if it was okay ot use a person’s name when the scenario was: “two star high school basketball players who were dropped from their team for disciplinary reasons after a woman complained to police that she had been raped in their hotel room. No charges have been filed against the two teenagers.” (Stebbins, 1). Then, in the article, responses from various sources were compiled into sections, the first being editors and publishers from Oklahoma. Their, the Oklahoma editor’s and publisher’s, views were: “they would not use the names unless and until charges were filed. Most would still not use the name of the 17-year old unless he was charged as an adult.” (Stebbins, 1). The editor of Grassroots Editor then shows the responses from editors from around the country, which were similar to the findings in Oklahoma. Following both opinion columns is a section devoted to the social and moral conditions, as well as the ethical and legal areas of the situation , and these quotes were more in-depth, and more controversial, “My main concern would be centered on why the 19-year-old was in their room, especially if this was a school-related function. In this matter, our local school board would be calling the coach and chaperones to task for allowing male-female interaction in students’ rooms after events, which is taken seriously here. Another point is that the complaint is from a 19-year-old woman. There may be charges of statutory rape against her. What was she doing in a room with a minor? They didn’t drag her there. Other concerns would be brought up.’ (Stebbins, 2) This controversial quote is the only one which brings up the idea of the woman being at fault, and in no way is discussed by the editor. This is the basic format for the entire essay, a quote is given with no response. The publication comes to a close stating that “their names appeared in most stories” (Stebbins, 3) and the writer does not tell his opinion, or wrap up the paper in a convenient manner.
