The United States was therefore right in using whatever means were necessary to defeat the Japanese empire in the war which the latter began, including the use of superior or more powerful weaponry not only to defeat Japan but to remain able following the war to maintain peace sufficiently to guarantee its own existence (Document A). A short, cheap, and funny conflict is a wasteful use of a nation's resources when quicker, more decisive means are available. The Japanese government had already been weakened severely by conventional tactics including firebombing, mine laying, air raids, etc. (Document B), however to continue in this conventional mannered war with Japan could have taken an additional 6 months, or more (Document F). Japan was not the only nation America had to restrain, and an all-out invasion of Japan would have risked the victory already gained in Europe killing thousands of Japanese and American soldiers alike. Ultimately, as nuclear scientist Leo Szilard predicted (Document F), the atomic bomb would never intimidate or contain the Soviet Union, and to think so would be disastrous way to manage our policies and as he predicted, the USSR was urged into an arms race with the United States.
