In the United States the ratio of women and men with anorexia nervosa is ten to one. The gender difference reflects our society’s expectations between men and women. Men are supposed to be strong and powerful so they feel ashamed of skinny bodies and want to be big and powerful. On the other hand, women should be thin because thin is considered to be attractive in society today. Eventually, women and men begin dieting to lose weight to appear the way society perceives. Dieting consists of calorie counting, running around track in eternal circles in order to maintain a sense of control. As a result, they will be more vulnerable to binge eating and compulsive exercise. Certain behaviors will occur such as fearing being fat despite what the scale implies. The causes of anorexia nervosa are not clear however there are some proposed causes, which are variant of depression, consequences of fears about becoming an adult, environment pressures, and difficult family relationships. Variant of depression focus on how the disorder tend to run in the families, and many individuals have symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fears about becoming an adult concentrates on not being ready to take on responsibilities and meeting the demands of independence. Environmental pressures imply that images from television, films, and pressure from peers illustrate that thin is best. Family relationships are difficulties that suggest the causes of the illness may occur as a result of a family member. Uncommon eating habits increase as a result of anorexia nervosa such as the person avoiding meals, taking only tiny portions, will not eat in food combinations, and mixing strange food combinations.
