...h fear and arrogance. As with all societies, the animals have laws which must be obeyed. Their laws stated that animals shall never become like humans; cruel and manipulative. They shall not wear clothing nor sleep in beds. Most importantly, they are to respect one another equality and killing another animal is strictly forbidden. Napoleon doesn't win them over with trust, false hope maybe, but there is no trust between the pig government and the rest of the farm animals, so they cannot be equal. The classic hypocrisy seen here is too hard to miss. Squealer consoles the animals, saying, "Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure. On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?" As soon as Snowball is run out of the farm, we see Napoleon becoming a power hungry ruthless dictator. He takes no chances, and right from the start displays distrust in the other animals, as he is accompanied by guard dogs at every step of the farm. Gradually, we see as more power and control that is gained by Napoleon's government, the closer he resembles that of a human. He abuses his power when he cuts the rations of food given to his subjects, and forced upon them a more strenuous work day. Meanwhile, the pigs as leaders are taking bigger food rations for themselves justifying their behaviour as something necessary for the "brains" of their animal society. They also find new residence in the farm houses, and sleeping arrangements in the human beds, as well as the consumption of alcohol. Napoleon also considers trade, and associates with humans. Ever so slowly, Animal Farm is being pushed closer back to the Manor Farm ways, with the one and only exception; Napoleon has taken the place of Mr Jones.
