Ruth is an Ugandan and is almost sixteen years old; she is girl that has suffered a lot. When she was twelve years old some revolutionaries raped her and also tried to kill her but she survived. Ruth feels a deep admiration for Amber and that is one of the reason why they are good friends. Patrick is from Uganda too. He is a little old than Ruth. Patrick is the fiancé of Ruth and later in the story they get married. He is a missionary and evangelist that was a good friend of Boyce, Heather and Amber. The story takes place in Uganda, Africa. It can be describe as a beautiful place, full of wonderful scenarios, where the earth is red and is cover by a green carpet, where the birds sing every morning. But not everything is too beautiful there is also the illness of the people, the poverty, suffering and persecution of innocents. The mood of the story is composed of drama, romanticism, spirituality, and inspiration. The plot of the story is about a girl called Amber whose ambitions are very poor. Amber feels that her life is boring and does not want to do something to have a better one. When Heather returned from Africa, Amber feels that nobody understands her, she feels that nobody cares about her. Heather is discouraged to see that her sister, Amber, seems no more mature than when she left. While Heather has change a great deal, the other family members did not change anything to make their lives better. Amber was happy because of the return of her sister but later she began to have problems with her. Heather changed a lot and Amber can’t deal with the new Heather. Amber’s personal problems increased quickly, her engagement with Dylan is terrible, she has not any truthful friend and her life has no where to go because she has not any dream or illusion for her future. Heather’s sense of purpose in renewed when she persuades her mother to travel with her back to Uganda, Africa to try to save the baby Alice; the baby that Heather rescued on her mission trip. But when Heather becomes ill and cannot undertake the journey to Africa, Amber feels that she has to do something for her sister. Amber began with propositions to go in her place but her parents, Janet and Ted said no in several times. One of the reasons why they did not want that their child takes the place of Heather is because they want Amber to enter to the University of Miami. But Amber just wants to finish high school and work in something when she is graduated. Her parents do not agree with her and that becomes a big problem between Amber and her parents. After several discussions, Amber’s parents decided and agree that Amber can take the place of her sister. Amber agrees to go to Africa, she thinks that this could help her to change her boring life. But she does not feel charity in her heart; she only wants to go because of her sister’s problems. Even though the school years in not already finish she decides to go, but after she had to do all her final exams. Later Janet and Amber set off to their journey to Africa; both of them with a lot of concerns in their heads. Amber was really worry about her sister because her problem with the liver was increasing. Amber and Janet arrived in Africa after a long trip from the United States to London, England and from England to Uganda. When Amber saw all the beauty of Africa she felt in love with that place, and later when Amber and Janet were in mission Amber felt in love a second time but this time with Boyce. Amber’ s first days were wonderful, she met a lot of people, she became friend of Ruth and Patrick, and also a very good friend with Boyce. Now from Boyce and her work at the hospital she was discovering something outside herself, something independent and unimpressed by her presence. She has begun to change spiritually but she does not realize that yet.
